Friends and colleagues,
We are very grateful for your recent actions over the past few weeks – we must not fall silent! As the Burmese military regime continues to lie to the people of Burma, we encourage you to join us in protest again on May 27th, the anniversary of the 1990 elections – the last opportunity the people of Burma had to express their political wishes.
Eighteen years since it failed to honour the results of the 1990 election, the draconian regime has staged an entirely fraudulent referendum while cruelly obstructing the world’s offerings of desperately needed aid in the wake of Cyclone Nargis.
The people of Burma have been told that they voted overwhelmingly in favour of a constitution designed to entrench military power. This ‘constitution’ was never made properly available, political dialogue was violently suppressed and the votes were openly manipulated. Meanwhile, as they have left aid languishing in Rangoon airport, in ships waiting off the coast, and in depots all over the world, the junta’s leaders have been handing out what little aid they have accepted in ostentatious ceremonies designed to demonstrate how much they care for the people they, in reality, show such contempt for.
This repugnant behaviour must stop! The people of Burma have the right to know what is really going on. We urge you to join us in protest and encourage as much media attention as possible! People in Thailand have already planned a protest in front of the Burmese Embassy in Bangkok. We encourage you to again show your solidarity with the people of Burma by staging a protest in front of Burmese Embassy in your area on May 27th. Please let us know of any actions you plan. Thanks!
